" That means a homeowner can place a sign on their own lot or, with permission, on a neighbor's frontage, but never more than one per frontage, never larger than 5 square feet, and never earlier than seven days before the sale starts. Because the sign is exempt rather than merely permitted, no application, fee or PBZ Department review is required to put one up, but it still has to come down once the sale ends since the exemption only covers the sale week itself.

The exemption sits inside the county's broader sign scope requirement in § 36-1050, which otherwise requires a permit for any sign construction, erection, alteration or relocation; garage sale signs, along with real estate signs, construction signs and other listed categories in the same section, are the exceptions carved out of that general permit rule.
