Full Breakdown
Sec. 89-92 of the development code treats a garage or yard sale as a temporary use and applies to the City of Lafayette. A sale can run no more than 72 hours and can't repeat at the same address more than twice in any six-month period. The advertisement for the sale, the yard-sale sign itself, can't occupy public property or the right-of-way, and can't obstruct pedestrians or vehicles on any public sidewalk or street. This section is scoped to the City of Lafayette; it doesn't extend to unincorporated Lafayette Parish or to the parish's other municipalities, including Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Scott, Youngsville and Milton, which write their own rules.
Violations & Fines
DPD code enforcement can order a noncompliant garage-sale sign removed from public property or the right-of-way, and repeated violations of the frequency or duration limits can bring a citation.
