Longmont prohibits placing any signs — including garage-sale, yard-sale, and similar temporary signs — in the public right-of-way. All signs are regulated by LMC Chapter 15.06; off-premise garage sale signs on utility poles, traffic signs, hydrants, or trees are subject to removal by the City and to the civil penalty schedule of $100 / $200 / $500.
Under LMC Chapter 15.06 (Signs), no signs of any kind may be displayed on city rights-of-way. The Longmont Code Enforcement office specifically applies this to garage-sale and other temporary off-premise signs: signs may not be attached to street lamp posts, street signs, traffic signs or signals, hydrants, trees, shrubs, fences, or utility poles. Garage-sale signs must be located on the same private property where the sale is being conducted, and must be removed promptly after the sale ends. Signs that obstruct sightlines for drivers or pedestrians may be removed as a public-safety hazard. Garage sales themselves are limited under LMC 6.44.090 (Code Enforcement's stated citation) to no more than 3 consecutive days per sale and no more than 12 total days of sales at the same location in a calendar year; the same time limits effectively cap how long an on-premise sign may stay up. Off-premise directional signs in the public right-of-way are subject to immediate removal by Code Enforcement and trigger the city's civil-penalty schedule.
Signs in the public right-of-way are removed by Code Enforcement. Civil penalty schedule: $100 first violation, $200 second, $500 third or subsequent.
