Temporary signs such as garage-sale and special-event signs are allowed in unincorporated Charleston County under ZLDR Sec. 9.8. In residential and agricultural districts a temporary sign is limited to 50 square feet, one per lot, with no internal illumination.
Charleston County ZLDR Sec. 9.8 sets standards for temporary signs. In Residential and Agricultural Zoning Districts a temporary sign may be up to 50 square feet, limited to one per lot, must not be internally illuminated, and must observe a six-foot height limit and roughly five-foot setback in residential districts. Signs must not block driver sightlines (Sec. 9.8.1.H) or interfere with traffic-control devices. Signs placed in the public right-of-way or on utility poles are prohibited and may be removed. There is no county permit for a standard garage-sale sign under the size cap. Municipalities within the county apply their own temporary-sign rules.
Oversized, illuminated, or right-of-way garage-sale signs are subject to removal and enforcement under ZLDR Chapter 11.
