Texas City, TX Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 155.069 of the Texas City Code of Ordinances gives the person holding a garage sale in Texas City, Galveston County, the right to post two on-premises and two off-premises temporary signs, on private property only. Each sign cannot exceed two square feet in size, and all signs must be removed by Sunday at 6:00 p.m. after the sale.

A second provision speaks to the same signs. Section 155.026(C) exempts from the sign permit requirements temporary signs advertising the date, time and location of a garage or yard sale and not exceeding four square feet in area, and says such signs shall be posted no more than three days prior to and removed one day after the sale. The two sections print different size caps, two square feet and four square feet, and different removal deadlines, Sunday at 6:00 p.m. after the sale and one day after the sale. The code prints both without reconciling them. A two-square-foot sign satisfies both size caps.

Where signs cannot go is set elsewhere in Chapter 155. Section 155.051 says no person shall attach or maintain a sign upon any tree, street sign, bench, fence, utility pole or other public or private amenity, and § 155.069 itself limits garage sale signs to private property. Section 155.044 adds that no sign can obstruct free and clear vision at any street intersection or interfere with, obstruct the view of or be confused with any authorized traffic sign, signal or device because of its position, shape or color.

The Building Official enforces the chapter. Under § 155.086, written notice goes to the permittee or the owner of the property where the sign stands, and if the sign is not removed or altered within ten calendar days the city can do so and assess the costs.
