Union County, NC Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Union County's Unified Development Ordinance does not list garage sales, yard sales or estate sales as their own sign type. 030-K, L, M, N, or O,' the same clause that covers any other short-term sign Article 50 does not separately address. That catch-all sets three limits: only one such sign is allowed per lot, the sign cannot exceed 4 square feet in surface area, and it cannot be displayed for more than 10 consecutive days or more than 20 days total in any calendar year.

No sign permit is required as long as all three limits are met. This rule applies only in unincorporated Union County; a garage sale inside Monroe, Indian Trail, Waxhaw or any other town is governed by that town's own temporary-sign rules, not the county UDO. 030-P alone to post signs at the subdivision entrance or along nearby roads it does not own; those off-site directional signs need the landowner's permission and still count against that lot's one-sign, 4-square-foot allowance. Signs placed in the public right-of-way, such as on a utility pole or street median, remain prohibited under Article 50's general sign-characteristics rules regardless of this exemption.
