Utah County and Provo/Orem allow small temporary garage-sale signs (typically 4 sq ft) on private property and limited off-premises directional signs, but prohibit attachment to utility poles, traffic signs, and public property. Signs must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends.
Utah County Land Use Ordinance Chapter 10 and municipal sign codes in Provo (§14.38) and Orem (§22-6) permit temporary garage, yard, and estate sale signs with clear restrictions. Signs on private property hosting the sale are typically limited to 4 to 6 square feet and no more than 4 feet tall. Off-premises directional signs are allowed in limited numbers (usually no more than 4 signs total) and only with the property owner's permission; placement in the public right-of-way, on utility poles, street sign posts, traffic signal poles, or government property is expressly prohibited under Provo §14.38.120 and parallel county and Orem rules. Signs may be posted no earlier than 24–48 hours before the sale and must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends. Some neighborhoods in BYU student-heavy areas have added HOA restrictions. A garage-sale permit is not required in Utah County unincorporated areas but Provo recommends registration for sales exceeding 2 days or 3 per year to avoid being classified as a home business.
