Orem, UT Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

City Code Section 14-3-3 classifies a garage-sale sign as an "Accessory Residential Sign," the same category used for yard-sale and for-sale signs. No sign permit is required, but the ordinance caps the sign's height at six feet unless it is attached to a fence or the wall of a structure, in which case that surface's own mounting rule applies instead. The sign's area cannot exceed six square feet, and a homeowner may post no more than two accessory residential signs bearing a commercial message, such as a garage-sale sign, on the parcel at one time. An accessory residential sign otherwise may not advertise a home occupation or any other commercial message beyond what the code expressly allows.

Section 22-14-28, Garage Sales, folds this sign rule into the broader conditions for holding a sale: the sale must be run by bona fide residents of the premises (or a combined "multifamily" sale with neighboring households), confined to the garage, patio or yard, limited to the residents' own belongings rather than goods bought for resale, and the goods offered cannot be placed on the public sidewalk or right-of-way. A single address may hold no more than two garage sales in any calendar year, and each sale is capped at three consecutive calendar days. The section directly states that "all signs advertising the garage sale comply with the requirements of Section 14-3-3 Accessory Residential Signs," tying the two provisions together. A garage sale, and by extension its signage, that does not meet these conditions is not a permitted accessory use in a residential zone.
