Orem, UT Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Sign Zone E, part of Orem City Code Section 14-3-3's Specific Regulations by Sign Type, singles out properties along 1200 West and Sandhill Road for stricter freeway-orientation rules than the rest of the City. A freestanding pole sign in this zone generally may not be oriented toward 1200 West or Sandhill Road at all; the exception is a business that caters to the traveling public, a term the code defines narrowly as hotels and motels, restaurants and fast-food establishments, service stations and convenience stores, truck stops, and regional commercial centers, and only if that business sits within 660 feet of a freeway interchange.

Even a qualifying pole sign must be set back from the 1200 West or Sandhill Road right-of-way by a distance at least equal to the sign's own height, so a 30-foot sign needs a 30-foot setback from that street line. A separate allowance lets a business or business complex along either street that also touches Interstate 15 put up a pole sign oriented toward the freeway itself, provided the sign sits no farther from the I-15 right-of-way than a distance equal to its height. Size and height for every Zone E sign then default to the Sign Zone A table, except that the code raises the absolute height ceiling for the freeway-facing case to 35 feet above the natural grade at the sign, or 25 feet above the perpendicular I-15 grade, whichever produces the taller allowance. Sign Zone F, the depressed-elevation area, borrows these Zone E rules but allows up to 50 feet above the interstate grade instead.
