Garage sale signs in Winston-Salem may not be placed on utility poles, traffic signs, or in public rights-of-way. Signs on private property are allowed during the sale and must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends.
Under the Winston-Salem Unified Development Ordinances, garage sale signs are classified as temporary signs. They may be posted on the sellers own private property at any time during the sale. Off-site signs on other private property require the owners permission and are limited to 4 square feet per sign. Signs cannot be attached to utility poles, stop signs, street signs, traffic signals, trees, or fences in the public right-of-way. Signs in medians, islands, or on city-owned property are prohibited. All garage sale signs must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends. Public Works crews routinely remove illegally posted signs from poles and rights-of-way, often at substantial cost to the city each year. HOAs frequently have additional rules about sign size, duration, and placement. For annual neighborhood-wide sales (common in Ardmore, Buena Vista, and Washington Park), the HOA typically coordinates a single permit or permission from city staff.
Illegally posted signs are removed without notice. Repeat offenders may be billed $25 per sign removed. Citations up to $100 can apply for flagrant or repeated violations.
