Dunedin's sign code excludes traditional holiday and seasonal decorations from the definition of a sign, allowing residents to display lights and decorations without permits, provided they do not create traffic hazards or block public rights-of-way.
Dunedin's Appendix A definitions describe holiday and seasonal decorations as decorations pertaining to legal or recognized holidays or seasonal occasions. Decorations that do not contain commercial messaging are not regulated as signs under Chapter 105 and do not require a permit. However, they cannot encroach on public rights-of-way, obstruct traffic visibility, or violate the prohibited-signs list in Section 105-29.1.3 (such as flashing lights that mimic traffic signals). Inflatables, projection displays, and lighting must remain on the host property and respect the city's general nuisance and noise rules.
Decorations creating traffic hazards or in the right-of-way may be removed by the city. Persistent issues may trigger code enforcement.
