Sterling Heights, MI Sign Regulations: Holiday Displays (2026)

Sterling Heights' Zoning Ordinance devotes an entire section, 24.06, to exterior lighting, and it flatly bans moving, flashing, or intermittent light sources across the city. But that same subsection carves out an exception for anything 'authorized in section 28.13 regulating signs' -- and the sign ordinance separately states that LED lights, strings of light bulbs, and similar wind- or power-driven devices are permitted as holiday decorations. In practice: steady-burning holiday lights are unregulated, and even blinking or animated ones qualify for the exception once they're decorating for a holiday, without a separate lighting permit.
