Taylorsville, UT Sign Regulations: Holiday Displays (2026)

Section 13.26.100(C)(4) of the Taylorsville City Code defines holiday decorations as noncommercial displays of a primarily decorative nature that are clearly incidental, customary, and commonly associated with any national, local, or religious holiday, and places them in the list of temporary signs allowed citywide without a sign permit. Unlike most temporary sign categories in the same list, which the city caps by square footage (community signs at 32 square feet, corporate flags at 16 square feet), holiday decorations carry no size, number, or type limit under this provision.

The tradeoff for that flexibility is timing: once the corresponding holiday has passed, the property owner has ten calendar days to take the display down; a display left up longer than that no longer qualifies for the permit exemption. The section also carries a safety condition that applies throughout the display period: decorations must be placed so they do not create confusion with authorized traffic lights and signals and must conform to traffic safety standards, the same visibility triangle and clearance rules that apply to other signs under 13.26.050(C).

Because the exemption sits inside the sign code rather than a separate holiday ordinance, enforcement runs through the same Community Development director process used for all nonconforming or illegal signs under 13.26.020: a written notice of violation followed by an abatement or removal order if the display is not corrected.
