Wake County UDO Article 18 governs political signs in unincorporated areas. Signs may be erected starting 30 days before early voting begins and must be removed within 10 calendar days after the election. Right-of-way signs are capped at 6 square feet and 42 inches high.
Under Wake County UDO Article 18 and NCGS §136-32, political signs may be placed on private property with the owner's permission and in the right-of-way of state-maintained roads (NCDOT ROW) under specific rules. ROW signs must not exceed 6 sq ft in area, must be under 42 inches above pavement edge, must not be in fully-controlled-access highway ROW, and must have prior consent of any abutting residence, business, or religious institution. Polling-place buffer zone is 50 feet from entry (no less than 25 ft, set by Wake Board of Elections). Posting period: 30 days before start of early voting, removed within 10 days after election day.
Signs in violation may be removed by NCDOT or the county without notice. Repeat violators may face civil citation under Wake UDO Article 22 enforcement provisions.
