Cary, NC Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

LDO § 7.2.7 lets fences and walls stand as tall as the zoning district's building height limit when located outside the minimum front, rear, or side yard setbacks in Section 6.1's dimensional tables. Inside those setbacks, fences and walls are capped at 8 feet unless approved as part of a landscape buffer, development plan, Special Use Permit, or variance; entry columns can reach 12 feet if approved as a sign alternative. Fences and walls taller than 42 inches near a thoroughfare or collector street must add screening shrubs, and no fence or wall may obstruct a required sight-distance triangle at intersections.
