5 lists political signs on private property among the Sign Code's permit-exempt categories, but the exemption comes with three hard limits rather than a blank check. A sign cannot go up more than sixty calendar days before the last day for casting ballots in the election it refers to, and it must come down within ten calendar days after that last day for casting ballots, whether the election is a primary, general, special district, or referendum vote. Each individual political sign is capped at thirty-two square feet of sign area, though the ordinance places no limit on the number of signs a property may display within that window.

5. Because the exemption sits inside the Sign Code's general provisions, a political sign otherwise still has to meet the code's structural rules, such as staying out of the public right-of-way and not obstructing safe sight distance, even though it doesn't need its own permit. § 11-268.
