Yavapai County, AZ Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Yavapai County regulates signs through Section 601 of the Planning and Zoning Ordinance for the Unincorporated Areas (updated through December 17, 2025). Section 601.B lists categories of "Exempt Signs" that need no permit and are excused from "other provisions of this Ordinance" as long as they meet the stated conditions. Item 7 covers signage mounted inside a building, including window displays: "Signs located within structures, including inside window signs intended to be seen from outside of the building." Unlike the political-sign exemption capped at 32 square feet (Section 601.B.5) or the patriotic and religious display exemption capped at a 30-foot height threshold (Section 601.B.6), the window-sign exemption in Item 7 carries no numeric size or duration limit in the ordinance text.

Outside this exemption, the county's general sign rule (Section 601.A.15) requires a permit under Subsection L for any new sign exceeding six square feet in area or eight feet in height. Enforcement runs through the Development Services Department's Land Use Specialist, who can order correction of a dangerous, abandoned, or violating sign within 30 days under Section 601.A.20, with removal cost billed to the owner under A.R.S. § 11-268 if the deadline passes. Because Item 7 places interior window signage outside "this Ordinance" altogether, that permit threshold and the removal/billing enforcement mechanism do not reach a sign mounted inside a structure and viewed through glass. A business posting a large product poster or seasonal banner taped inside a storefront window in the unincorporated county needs no Development Services sign permit and faces no county square-footage cap, so long as the sign stays inside the building rather than on an exterior wall or affixed to the outside of the glass.
