Freehold Township, NJ Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

C of the Land Use chapter defines a political sign as a temporary sign supporting candidates for office or urging action on any other matter on the ballot of a primary, general or special election. Section 190-174 lists political signs among the categories allowed without a sign permit, but Subsection L attaches four conditions. First, placement requires permission of the person or entity who owns or has legal control over the property, so a sign on private property without the owner's consent is not a permitted political sign at all.

Second, the sign must be removed not more than 14 days after the election it relates to. L(3) layers on additional spacing rules: there must be at least 100 feet of separation between signs belonging to the same candidate or campaign, all signs must sit more than two feet from the curb or, where there is no curb, from the edge of the paved roadway, and no political sign may be placed closer than 10 feet to any other candidate's or campaign's sign. L(4) makes clear that a sign violating the placement standards can be removed by any interested party without prior notice, independent of whatever penalty applies under Section 190-185.
