Hackensack regulates signage under Chapter 175 zoning provisions but cannot impose content-based restrictions on political signs. Reasonable time, place, and manner rules apply equally to all temporary residential signage.
Following Reed v. Town of Gilbert (2015), Hackensack's sign regulations cannot single out political signs for stricter rules than other temporary signage. The city's zoning chapter sets size limits typically in the range of 6 square feet for residential temporary signs, with restrictions on placement in public rights-of-way, on utility poles, or in a manner that obstructs sight lines. Signs may not be illuminated unless specifically permitted, and they must be removed within a reasonable period after the election. Property owners control placement on private property, while signs on public property are generally prohibited under Chapter 175.
Improperly placed political signs may be removed by the city; persistent violations can result in fines from $50 to $500 per sign.
