Lodi regulates temporary signs, including political signs, under LMC Chapter 17.34 (Signs), as amended by Ordinance No. 1922. The ordinance is content-neutral and applies the same time, place, and manner rules regardless of message content.
Lodi's sign code under LMC 17.34 was amended by Ordinance No. 1922 to ensure compliance with the U.S. Supreme Court's content-neutral sign-regulation requirements (Reed v. Town of Gilbert). Section 17.34.070 governs temporary and portable signs, with limits on size, number per parcel, and placement in setbacks and right-of-way; the rules apply equally to political, real-estate, garage-sale, and other temporary messages. Signs cannot be placed in the public right-of-way (parkways between sidewalk and curb, traffic islands, or attached to utility poles) and may not block sight-lines at intersections or driveways. Removal after a campaign or event is the responsibility of the property owner or person placing the sign.
Signs placed in the right-of-way or violating size/placement standards may be removed by Public Works without notice. Persistent or repeat violations may be cited under LMC 17.34 with administrative citations.
