Madison regulates political signs content-neutrally as temporary yard signs. In residential zones each sign may be up to 6 square feet and 6 feet tall, with no time limit, but they may not sit in a public right-of-way.
Following the content-neutral approach required after Reed v. Town of Gilbert, Madison's Zoning Ordinance (Section 9-12) does not single out "political" signs; a campaign sign is a temporary yard sign. Under Section 9-12-3, temporary yard signs are allowed on any lot with no time restriction, subject to a maximum individual sign area of 6 square feet in agricultural and residential districts (8 sq ft elsewhere) and a maximum height of 6 feet. Total sign area per lot frontage scales from 24 sq ft (up to 100 ft of frontage) upward. Signs may not be illuminated, must not protrude above the roofline, and may not be placed in a public right-of-way. A permit is required only for temporary signs exceeding 12
Signs in the right-of-way or exceeding size limits may be removed by the City; enforcement is handled by Code Enforcement.
