Arizona law (ARS 16-1019) protects the right to display political signs on residential property. Cities cannot prohibit political signs within prescribed size limits. Surprise permits political signs subject to state law protections and general sign code safety provisions.
Arizona Revised Statute 16-1019 protects the right of property owners to display political signs on their residential property. Cities cannot prohibit political signs that are within the size limits established by state law (generally 4 feet by 4 feet for residential areas). Signs must be placed on private property with the owner's consent. Signs in the public right-of-way are generally prohibited. Political signs must be removed within 15 days after the election. The city's sign code may regulate placement for traffic safety (visibility triangles at intersections) but cannot prohibit political expression. HOAs may have additional sign rules but Arizona law limits their ability to restrict political signs.
Signs in the public right-of-way may be removed by the city. Signs not removed within 15 days after the election may be cited.
