Bolingbrook, IL Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Sec. 54-342(9) exempts non-illuminated window signs covering no more than 60 percent of the window area, excluding glass doors, from the village's sign article. Chapter 54 separately defines a window sign in Sec. 54-343(b)(3) as a sign which is applied or attached to or located within three feet of the interior of a window, which sign may be seen through the window from the exterior of the structure, so the coverage limit reaches signage placed close to the glass from inside, not just signs physically stuck to it.

Because the exemption is capped at 60 percent, a storefront covering more than 60 percent of its window area with signage, or using illuminated window signs at all, falls outside the exemption and must comply with whatever general sign standards Article VI otherwise applies to that sign type and zoning district, potentially including a permit. Glass doors are carved out of the window-area calculation entirely, meaning signage placed on or behind door glass is not counted toward, or protected by, the 60 percent allowance for adjacent display windows.

The opening paragraph of Sec. 54-342 makes clear that even exempt window signs remain subject to Secs. 54-340 and 54-341, the article's general standards, and to any applicable building code sign provisions.
