Chelsea, MA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Chelsea's sign code carves out a design-standard track for storefronts in the BR and BR2 Retail Business Districts, and window and door graphics are one of seven listed sign types (§ 34-109(c)). A window graphic is defined as lettering or artwork that typically displays a business's name and logo and may state the nature of the business, usually placed on the main storefront display window; detailed information such as phone numbers and hours is meant to be smaller and kept on the entry door instead, and a tenant may use graphics on each of its main display windows.

The binding limit is numeric: window graphics may not exceed 15 percent of the size of the window they're affixed to, and retailers are told to minimize extra postings that would further obscure views into the space. On materials, individual letters and graphics such as cut vinyl, metal leaf or hand-painted lettering are preferred, white or light-colored letters are favored over dark ones for visibility, and large decals are strongly discouraged. Because a window graphic is still a sign under Chapter 34, one that exceeds six square feet also trips the chapter's general sign-permit clause at § 34-109(a)(1), which requires review by the building inspector and the zoning enforcement officer before it goes up.

All signs, including window graphics, must also be kept in good repair and neat appearance under § 34-109(a)(3), with the owner responsible for an annual inspection of the sign.
