Revere, MA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Revere treats window signage as a distinct category under Chapter 17.36, separate from the permit system that governs freestanding and wall signs. Section 17.36.070, 'Window signs,' permits signs painted or placed on the inside of the glass of a window, provided that the aggregate area of such signs does not exceed thirty-five percent of the area of the window glass. The cap is measured against the area of the glass itself, not the storefront or building facade, so a business with several window panes must keep the combined lettered, painted or placed signage within that share of the actual glass surface in each opening.

Window signs also get a break the rest of the temporary sign category does not. Section 17.36.080 requires a cash deposit with the building inspector before most temporary signs go up, sized to the amount listed in the code's fee table, but it draws the line at the window: the deposit applies to a temporary sign 'other than a temporary sign placed in a window.' Because temporary window signs are excluded from that clause, they only have to clear the thirty-five percent area test in Section 17.36.070, while sandwich boards, banners and other temporary signage placed outside a window face both the permit deposit and a removal deadline.
