Chapter 240, the Sign and Illumination Law, defines a sign as any device visible to the public that is over 144 square inches and intended to communicate a message or attract attention, expressly excluding items in the window of a residence or a religious or educational institution from regulation. L. No. 12-1969, separately classifies a window or inside sign as one erected or maintained in a building's interior and visible from a public or private street. L. No. 5-1995: no single sign, or combination of signs, attached to or located within two feet of a window may cover more than 25% of that window's area, though signs on the inside of a window are excluded when calculating the size of otherwise permissible wall, canopy or yard business signs.

That coverage rule sits inside the Town-wide sign standards of § 240-3C, which also require signs to relate solely to the business conducted on the premises, bar obstructions to motorist or pedestrian visibility, and make illuminated business signs go dark thirty minutes after closing on automatic controls. The Building Inspector enforces sign regulations, and decisions can be appealed to the Zoning Board of Appeals under § 240-9.
