Mason County, WA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Mason County Code Section 17.15.140 sets the standard for a category the code calls "miscellaneous tenant signs," which explicitly includes signs hung from building canopies (blade signs), temporary ground-placed A-board signs, and window signs. All three sign types share the same two-part test: the sign cannot exceed twelve square feet in area, and it must be located within ten feet of the individual or multi-tenant building entrance it serves. The section does not distinguish window signs from A-boards or blade signs for sizing purposes, so a business with several ground floor windows near its entrance can mix sign types as long as each stays under the twelve-square-foot cap and within the ten-foot entrance radius.

Section 17.15.150 separately permits neon signs in windows without adding its own size limit, layering onto the general standard. These sign rules sit in Chapter 17.15, the "Allyn Sign Code," which the county enacted to safeguard public safety and preserve the Allyn UGA's appearance while still giving businesses room for identification and advertising, per Section 17.15.010. A related vision-clearance rule in Section 17.15.120(b) bars any sign, including a window sign visible from outside, from sitting within the triangular vision-clearance area at a street intersection, measured thirty feet from the corner along each right-of-way. Mason County officials enforce the sign code and may remove noncompliant signs under Section 17.15.170.
