Orangeburg County, SC Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

2 sorts every sign type the Zoning Ordinance recognizes into a grid of nine columns, one for each zoning district (RS, RG, RO, CN, CG, BI, FA, RC) plus a column for institutional uses sited within a residential district (INS). 'Window' signs appear in the Building Sign row group, alongside Canopy, Identification, Marquee, Projecting, Roof and Wall signs. The Window row is marked 'N,' not allowed under any circumstances, only in the two residential districts, RS and RG; every remaining column, RO, CN, CG, BI, FA, RC and INS, is marked 'A,' meaning a window sign may go up without prior permit approval.

That places window signage in the most permissive category the ordinance offers, on par with building identification and incidental signs, rather than with signs like Wall, Marquee or Projecting that need a permit ('P') in the commercial districts. 7-5 if it is lit. Because RS and RG cover the county's rural and suburban residential subdivisions, a homeowner there cannot place a commercial or advertising sign in a window; a business in any commercial, office, forest/agricultural or industrial district may do so without a separate application.
