Porterville, CA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Window signs get lighter treatment than almost any other sign type in Porterville's code. Section 305.10(C) exempts a sign painted or otherwise adhered directly onto a window from the permit requirements that apply to the rest of Article 305, Signs, so a business can change window graphics without filing for City approval each time. The coverage standard in the same subsection allows a window sign to occupy up to one hundred percent of the total glass window area along each building facade, meaning the code sets no practical ceiling on how much of a storefront's glass can be covered, though the subsection flags that other applicable laws tied to the type and use of the business can still limit it.

The one hard limit in Section 305.10(C) is height: a window sign cannot be mounted or placed on a window higher than the second story of the building, keeping upper-floor windows above a two-story storefront free of signage. Window signs sit alongside the chapter's other posting rules, including the prohibition in Section 305.06(G) on tacked or pasted posters on building walls, which that same subsection says does not reach signs placed in windows under Section 305.10(e). All of Article 305 was most recently readopted by Ordinance 1918 on October 7, 2025.
