West Des Moines, IA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Section 9-18-16(B)(4)(f) defines a window sign as any graphic installed, adhered to or painted on an individual glazed surface panel, excluding merchandise displayed in a window and holiday displays. Permanent window signs, meaning graphics meant to stay in place more than 30 days and not easily changed, such as window vinyl, are allowed on non-residential uses but capped at 25% of the window area of that building facade. Up to 100% of the window area can be covered for privacy or sunscreen purposes, but only 25% of that covered area may carry a graphic; the rest must be a solid neutral color.

Temporary window signs, meaning short-term graphics in place less than 30 days such as posters or temporary painted signs, are allowed on non-residential uses on an additional 15% of the facade's window area, stacking on top of the permanent allowance. If a permanent window sign exceeds the 25% cap, the entire sign is reclassified and counted as wall signage instead, subjecting it to the separate wall sign area limits in section 9-18-16. No permit is required for window signs, but the property owner may need to show the City the calculations demonstrating compliance upon request.

Any interior sign placed primarily to be viewed from outside the glass, and that cannot easily be read from within the building, is treated as wall signage rather than a window sign for counting purposes.
