Hendricks County, IN Solar Energy: Panel Permits (2026)

The County Planning and Building Department administers solar permitting through the Uniform Schedule adopted at § 37.25(D). A ground mounted system pays a $75 application review fee, then three separate $50 inspections, for footing, electric work and the final sign off, adding $150 in inspections on top of the review fee for a $225 total. A roof mounted array is instead billed a single combined $100 filing and inspection fee rather than itemized inspection stops. A larger, non-residential installation, listed separately as a Generator/Solar Grid/Wind Generator, is billed a $300 application review fee plus five $100 inspections covering footing, foundation, rough-in, bonding and final.

Beyond the fee table, the county's general Building Regulations chapter controls how that permit is obtained. Section 150.40(B) requires that a permit be obtained before beginning construction, alteration, repair or placement of any structure, with every permit issued by the Building Commissioner out of the Planning and Building Department. Section 150.41 directs the Building Commissioner to review every application for compliance before issuance, and § 150.42 requires staged inspections of the work as it proceeds, with reinspection required if the work is not ready when the inspector arrives. If a solar installation goes up without the required review, § 150.44 lets the Building Commissioner issue a written stop work order halting construction until the county authorizes it to resume.

This fee schedule does not set panel height, property-line setback, or ground coverage limits for solar arrays; those siting standards sit in the county's separate Zoning Ordinance, which is not part of this general code chapter.
