Queen Creek, AZ Solar Energy: Panel Permits (2026)

Town Code § 7-1-4-1 requires any owner or authorized agent who intends to erect, install, or alter an electrical system regulated by the Town Building Code to first apply to the Building Official and obtain a permit, a duty last amended by Ordinance 797-22 on October 19, 2022; the exemption list in Section 7-1-4-2-3, which excuses things like portable equipment and low-voltage control circuits, does not carve out solar photovoltaic systems, so a rooftop grid-tied array is not permit-exempt. The Article 7-6 fee schedule, last amended by Ordinance 478-10 on May 5, 2010, sets a specific charge for this work: a Single Family Residential Grid-Tied Photovoltaic System permit costs $375 and includes one plan review and two inspections, while a Single Family Residential Solar Hot Water Heating System permit is priced separately at $150 and includes one plan review and one inspection.

Once installed, the system's wiring must also meet the marking rules the Town has adopted from the International Building Code at Section 1205: interior and exterior DC conduit, enclosures, raceways, cable assemblies, junction boxes, combiner boxes and disconnects must carry reflective, weather-resistant markings reading 'WARNING: PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER SOURCE' in letters at least 3/8 inch high, white on a red background, placed next to the main service disconnect where it is clearly visible from the point the disconnect is operated. That marking requirement comes from the adopted International Building Code rather than a Town-drafted section, but the Building Official enforces it as part of the same permit and inspection process.
