Walton County, FL Solar Energy: Panel Permits (2026)

Walton County Code § 6-66 requires anyone doing business as a contractor in the categories listed at § 6-67, including solar work, to hold a county license; contractors already certified by the State of Florida need only 'register' that state license with the Walton County Building Department rather than sit for a separate county exam. Section 6-67(m) defines a 'solar contractor' as one whose services cover the installation, alteration, repair, maintenance, relocation, or replacement of solar panels for potable solar water heating systems, swimming pool solar heating systems, and photovoltaic systems, along with associated appurtenances and equipment, for any use, public or private.

A separate, narrower category, the residential solar water heater contractor, is limited to domestic hot water and pool-heater systems on one-, two-, or three-family residences of two stories or less, and must subcontract any work needing a certificate the contractor does not hold. 00 for the same categories. 00 administrative fee so the county can track the license and insurance documents on file, and a license may be carried as inactive for half the usual fee. 04(D)(3) lets the Board of County Commissioners grant a case-by-case height exception on the same review track used for church steeples and radio towers.
