Redmond RMC 5.20.070 gives legal weight to No Soliciting signs posted at residences. Commercial solicitors must leave immediately. Violating a posted sign is a civil infraction enforceable by Police.
Under RMC 5.20.070, any residence displaying a clearly visible No Soliciting, No Peddlers, No Agents, or No Trespassing sign at the entrance or on the door is legally protected from commercial solicitation. Solicitors, including those holding valid Redmond solicitor permits, must not knock, ring the doorbell, or otherwise attempt to contact occupants of a posted residence. Signs must be legible at the point of access, typically mounted at the front door, gate, or other primary entrance. The word SOLICITING must appear (or equivalent such as PEDDLERS, AGENTS, or similar commercial solicitation language). Generic KEEP OUT signs may not meet the standard. Violating a posted sign is a civil infraction enforceable by Redmond Police. For political and religious canvassers, First Amendment jurisprudence (Watchtower v. Stratton, 2002) limits local enforcement, but most canvassers respect such signs as a matter of courtesy and training. Residents can request physical No Soliciting signs from the Police Department or purchase generic signs at hardware stores. Residents may also register on the Washington State Do Not Call list (attorneygeneral.gov) for phone solicitation protection, which is separate from door-to-door rules.
Commercial solicitation in violation of posted sign: civil infraction up to $250 under RMC 5.20.100. Repeat violations may result in permit revocation.
