Renton residents can post No Soliciting signs to prohibit commercial canvassers. Solicitors who ignore posted signs can be charged with criminal trespass under RCW 9A.52.
Renton residents have the right to prohibit door-to-door solicitation at their property by posting a clearly visible No Soliciting, No Peddlers, or No Trespassing sign at the entrance, on the front door, or near the doorbell. Under Renton Municipal Code solicitor provisions and Washington State criminal trespass law RCW 9A.52, commercial solicitors, peddlers, and vendors who ignore a posted no-soliciting sign and knock or ring the bell anyway can be reported to police and charged with criminal trespass in the second degree, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and $1,000 fine. The sign does not need to be elaborate, but it should be visible to a reasonable person approaching the door. The prohibition applies to commercial solicitors including contractors, window cleaners, lawn services, utility companies offering new service, and similar sales approaches. First Amendment protections may limit enforcement against purely religious or political canvassers, though residents can still request that they leave and refuse to engage. To report violations, residents can call Renton Police non-emergency at 425-430-7500. Some subdivisions and HOAs adopt community-wide no soliciting policies with enhanced signage at neighborhood entrances.
