Southfield, MI Soliciting & Door-to-Door: No-Knock Registry (2026)

Chapter 84 of the Southfield City Code backs residents' right to turn solicitors away at the door. Section 7.612 makes it unlawful for any person to conduct solicitation activities, whether or not they hold a city permit, once the owner or legal occupant has posted a sign at the entry to the premises bearing the words "No Solicitors," "No Solicitation," or similar wording showing that solicitation is not wanted. That protection covers the broad definition of solicitor in Sec. 7.602: anyone who goes onto private residential property uninvited to offer goods, services, property or to seek a contribution for political, charitable, religious or other noncommercial purposes.

On top of the signed-premises rule, Southfield sets one citywide window for all solicitation activity, permitted or not: Sec. 7.613 confines solicitation to the hours between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., closing off early mornings, evenings and nights entirely. A permit holder who ignores a posted sign or solicits outside those hours is also acting contrary to the terms of the permit itself, which is separately listed as grounds for the police chief to revoke the permit after notice and a hearing under Sec. 7.614(c).
