Cambridge, MA Soliciting & Door-to-Door: Solicitor Permits (2026)

010 of the Cambridge Municipal Code requires a permit from the Superintendent of Streets before any person sells goods upon a city sidewalk, or leaves goods or an article they own or are minding in a public way for more than ten minutes. It separately bars placing or keeping any table, stall, booth or other erection in a street, public place or sidewalk for merchandise sales without the Superintendent's permission. The permit fee set by the chapter is fifty cents. 070 ties the terms of that permit to whatever conditions the Superintendent attaches when it issues, and treats acceptance of the permit as agreement to comply with those conditions; breaching any of them is itself sufficient cause for revocation.

The chapter does not separately license door-to-door canvassing inside private residences, so a Cambridge vendor's core obligation here is keeping goods moving off the public way, or securing the Superintendent's permit before selling or displaying them there, rather than a distinct doorstep-solicitation permit. 36 also exposes a seller to the chapter's general fifty-dollar penalty for each offense.
