Mahwah requires door-to-door solicitors and peddlers to obtain a permit and pass a background check before canvassing residential neighborhoods.
The Mahwah Township Council adopted an ordinance requiring solicitors and peddlers to apply for a permit through the Township Clerk and submit to a background check before going door to door. Applicants provide identification, employer information, and the products or services being offered. Approved solicitors receive a permit that must be carried and shown on request. Election candidates, charitable and nonprofit solicitors, census-takers, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and similar youth groups are exempt from the permit requirement under the ordinance.
Permit revocation, municipal fines, removal from premises.
