Milwaukee, WI Special Events & Permits: Sidewalk Dining & Cafés (2026)

Milwaukee restaurants and bars that want sidewalk seating must get a sidewalk area dining permit from the city clerk before setting so much as a chair in the public right-of-way. The application requires a written plan of operation covering hours, capacity, security and clean-up plans, plus a scaled drawing showing tables, chairs, planters and other fixtures. New permits cost $2 per square foot of dining area plus a $100 application fee; renewals run $1 per square foot. Operators must carry liability insurance, maintain a 5-foot pedestrian clearance at all times, place furniture only on paved surfaces, and may not permanently attach anything to sidewalks, light poles, street trees or bicycle racks.
