Idaho Dangerous and At-Risk Dogs State Law

Idaho Code Section 25-2810 governs how courts determine that a dog is dangerous or at-risk after biting or attacking a person without provocation. Once declared dangerous, the dog must be kept in a secure enclosure or on a secure leash held by a competent adult when off the owner's property. Owners must permanently identify the dog with a microchip or tattoo and post visible Beware of Dog signs. Owners are civilly liable for injuries caused by dogs that attack non-trespassing people. Cities and counties may add stricter leash and licensing rules, but the dangerous-dog framework applies uniformly statewide.

Failure to comply with court-ordered restrictions for a dangerous dog is a misdemeanor, and a second offense can lead to the dog being destroyed under Section 25-2810.
