Massachusetts Swimming Pool Barrier Code Requirements

780 CMR (the State Building Code) and 105 CMR 435.00 require all residential swimming pools deeper than 24 inches to have a barrier at least 48 inches high. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching with the latch at least 54 inches above ground. Above-ground pools may use removable ladders. The code applies uniformly statewide and is enforced by local building inspectors. Public and semi-public pools follow stricter Department of Public Health standards.
