Wisconsin Captive Wildlife and Dangerous Animal Restrictions

Wis. Stat. ch. 169 and 2015 Wis. Act 79 regulate possession of captive wild animals, including big cats, bears, apes, and certain reptiles. The Department of Natural Resources issues licenses for native wildlife, while harmful exotic species like wild boar are banned outright under Wis. Stat. 169.20. Persons possessing dangerous exotic mammals before the effective date had to register and meet caging standards. Local municipalities may impose additional restrictions, but state licensing and prohibition of harmful species apply uniformly statewide. Veterinary inspection and disease testing requirements are state-controlled.

Possession of prohibited species or unlicensed captive wildlife may result in forfeitures up to $1,000, animal seizure, and revocation of any held DNR licenses.
