Akron requires all residential swimming pools to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high with self-closing, self-latching gates. This applies to in-ground and above-ground pools with water deeper than 24 inches.
Under Akron's building code (adopting the Ohio Building Code and International Residential Code), all swimming pools must have a barrier at least 48 inches high completely enclosing the pool area. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching with the latch on the pool side at least 54 inches above grade. The barrier may not have openings that allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Doors from the house providing direct pool access must have alarms. Existing pools must comply when ownership transfers or during major renovation.
Non-compliant pool barriers are a serious safety violation subject to immediate correction notices. Daily fines may apply until compliance is achieved.
