Boise pools require a barrier at least 48 inches tall completely surrounding the pool, with self-closing and self-latching gates. The standard applies to any pool or spa deeper than 24 inches per the Idaho Building Code.
The Idaho Building Code (IRC Appendix G as adopted) sets minimum pool barrier standards enforced by Boise Planning and Development Services. Barrier must be at least 48 inches measured from the outside finished grade. Vertical spacing between bars cannot exceed 4 inches; chain-link mesh openings cannot exceed 1.75 inches. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing, self-latching, and have the latch located at least 54 inches above the ground. If the house wall forms part of the enclosure, doors leading to the pool must have an audible alarm or the pool must have a power safety cover. Above-ground pools with walls 48 inches or taller satisfy the barrier if the ladder is removable or locked when unattended.
Non-compliant barrier: stop-use notice and correction required. Continued violation: civil penalty and potential drainage order.
