Ohio Building Code (OAC 4101:8) requires a 48-inch barrier around all Cincinnati residential pools. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching at 54 inches above grade.
OAC 4101:8-3-09 (Ohio Residential Code, Appendix G) mandates a barrier not less than 48 inches in height completely enclosing any residential swimming pool. The barrier must not have openings that allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Chain-link fencing must have no larger than 1.25-inch mesh if no slats are inserted. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch release mechanism located at least 54 inches above the finished ground surface on the pool side, or equipped with a key lock or combination lock. If the house wall serves as part of the barrier, all doors providing direct access to the pool must have self-closing devices and alarms that sound for at least 30 seconds when opened. Above-ground pool structures with walls 48 inches or higher may serve as the barrier if the access ladder is removable or lockable. Cincinnati building inspectors verify barrier compliance during pool inspections.
