Newport News requires all residential pools to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high with self-closing, self-latching gates. Virginia's Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) governs pool barrier requirements.
Under Virginia's USBC adopted by Newport News, all pools must have a barrier at least 48 inches high. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching with the latch at least 54 inches above grade. The barrier may not have openings larger than 4 inches. Doors from the house to the pool must have alarms or self-closing mechanisms. Building permits are required for pool installation.
Non-compliant pool barriers face immediate correction notices. Daily fines may apply until compliance is achieved.
