Omaha requires pool barriers for all private swimming pools. Nebraska follows IRC standards requiring a minimum 48-inch barrier. Building permits are required.
Omaha's Chapter 54 (Swimming Pools) and building code require that all private swimming pools be enclosed by a barrier meeting minimum safety standards. Nebraska follows the International Residential Code (IRC) which requires a minimum 48-inch pool barrier. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching. The barrier must prevent unsupervised access by young children. A building permit is required for pool construction and for pool fences. Contact the Permits and Inspections Division at 402-444-5350 for current requirements.
Pools without required barriers are safety violations subject to code enforcement. Fines may apply and the pool may need to be secured before use.
