Pearland enforces the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, requiring all residential pools to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high with self-closing and self-latching gates.
Pool barrier requirements adopted through Chapter 7 mirror ISPSC standards: enclosures must be a minimum of 48 inches measured from the outside grade, openings must not allow passage of a four-inch sphere, and gates must swing outward away from the pool with self-closing hinges and self-latching hardware mounted at least 54 inches above the ground. Where a dwelling wall serves as part of the barrier, doors leading to the pool area must have alarms or the pool must have a powered safety cover compliant with ASTM F1346.
Failure to maintain a compliant barrier can result in code enforcement citations, denial of final inspection, and fines up to $2,000 per day for ongoing safety violations.
