3(a) of the Unified Development Code, Fencing, governs residential fence height by yard. In side and rear yards, fences located in side or rear yards shall not exceed eight feet in height under subsection (a)(6). In the front yard, subsection (a)(2)a bars any fence or wall within the required front yard of any single-family or duplex residential lot which is adjacent to a public street, adding that no residential fence shall be closer than 15 feet to a public street, except where the side yard of a continuous corner lot adjoins a neighboring rear yard, in which case the fence may run to the property line.

The exception to the front-yard bar is a Decorative Fence: subsection (a)(2)b permits decorative fencing with openings not less than 50 percent of the fence area and not exceeding four feet in height in front yards, and if the lot fronts onto an identified Thoroughfare, the height may be increased to six feet. Chain link, woven wire mesh, and metal panel fencing are excluded from the decorative-fence exception and cannot go in a front yard at all. Non-residential districts get a single citywide limit instead of a yard-by-yard rule: subsection (b)(6) caps fence height at eight feet in all yards, and requires any front-yard fence outside the M-1/M-2 industrial districts to meet the same 50-percent-open decorative standard as residential lots. 1(i) rather than this section.
