Providence requires swimming pools to be enclosed by a fence or barrier at least 48 inches high with a self-closing, self-latching gate, in compliance with the state building code.
Rhode Island adopts the International Residential Code, which requires all residential swimming pools to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with latches at least 54 inches above grade on the exterior side. Openings must not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. The barrier requirement applies to both in-ground and above-ground pools. Providence's Building Official enforces these standards through the permitting process.
Failure to maintain proper pool barriers may result in citations, fines, and liability in the event of an accident.
